Mississippi Farm Bureau Statement on the Announcement of a Farm Bill Framework Agreement

The Mississippi Farm Bureau® Federation (MFBF) today expressed its strong support for the agreement that has been reached among the House and Senate Agriculture Committee leadership on provisions to be presented to the Farm Bill Conference Committee on a five-year Farm Bill.

“We are so pleased that the four principals have now come to an agreement on a final Farm Bill framework that will be presented to the entire group of Farm Bill Conferees,” said MFBF President Randy Knight.

The conferees that have been working on this agreement are Sen. Debbie Stabenow, (D-MI), Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee; Sen. Thad Cochran, (R-MS), Ranking Member of Agriculture; Rep. Frank Lucas, (R-OK), Chair of House Agriculture Committee; and Rep. Collin Peterson, (D-MN) Ranking Member of Agriculture Committee. The provisions within this framework represent sound farm policy and fiscally responsible measures that will provide Mississippi farmers and ranchers with a strong safety net in a five-year Farm Bill.  An enhanced crop insurance program is expected to be the vehicle that keeps this safety net available for farmers and gives them the assurance that they will still be able to farm through downturns in the economy.

“Without the leadership of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran, we would not have been successful in securing these key components.  As always, we commend his leadership and knowledge in navigating through this difficult process,” said Knight.  “Our farmers and ranchers need a dependable safety net in order to continue to provide the safest, most affordable food in the world.  We look forward to working with members of the House and Senate to advance this legislation through the Farm Bill Conference Committee and onto the floor for a final vote.”
