Clark honored by Farm Bureau with Excellence in Leadership Award
Jackson – The Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation presented its
Excellence in Leadership Award to Sylvia Clark of Vardaman. Sylvia and
her husband, Norman , raise 300 acres of sweet potatoes near Vardaman
and Sylvia spends countless hours promoting the product.
“Sylvia has spent more than 30 years pushing sweet potatoes,”
said Farm Bureau President David Waide. “Without her efforts, Vardaman
sweet potatoes would still be one of the best kept secret in the south.”
Clark says her goal is to raise the public’s awareness of the uses
for sweet potatoes.
“Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest vegetables that you can
eat,” said Clark . “If people would substitute sweet potatoes
for some other vegetables in their diet, I believe they would a real increase
in their health.”
Clark has been the women’s chairman for the Calhoun County Farm
Bureau since 1991 and is involved in many other areas of Farm Bureau.
She is on the Ag in the Classroom committee and has presented programs
for the Ag in the Classroom Teacher Workshops held this past summer all
over Mississippi . She is also a tireless worker at the Sweet Potato Festival
held each November in Vardaman.
The Excellence in Leadership Award was established to recognize volunteer
leaders of Farm Bureau who have made a significant contribution to Farm
Bureau and agriculture in Mississippi . Their contributions have been
performed as a result of unselfish effort to strengthen Farm Bureau and
to enhance rural life in Mississippi .
