Hyde-Smith given Ag Ambassador Award by Farm Bureau

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven has been named the winner of Farm Bureau’s Ag Ambassador Award for 2008 at the organization’s annual meeting on December 5.

Senator Hyde-Smith is a cattle farmer and has represented Senate District 39 consisting of Lincoln, Lawrence, and Simpson counties since 2000.

“During her time in the Legislature Senator Hyde-Smith has been an advocate for agriculture and has always been a friend to the farmers and rural residents of Mississippi,” said Farm Bureau President David Waide. “She has always been there with an open mind and a listening ear whenever she has been called on by Farm Bureau.”

“Farm Bureau was particularly pleased by Senator Hyde-Smith’s impassioned speech in the legislature during the eminent domain debate,” Waide continued. “She really put the pressure on the senators who were not with us.”

During that speech, Senator Hyde-Smith told her fellow senators that voting against the override of Governor Barbour’s veto would be an unpopular decision back in their home districts.

“If you go back home and run for any office……you better get yourself a pair of asbestos underwear,” said Hyde-Smith. “Because somebody is gonna light up your rear end on this one. This is a vote people never forget.”

The Ag Ambassador Award was created to recognize individuals who have gone beyond their normal range of activities in promoting Mississippi agriculture. It’s not presented every year – only when Farm Bureau feels that it has been earned.
